What does being a sail trainee involve?
On board
Get to know life at sea! Experienced or not quite yet? No problem! Because on board, you will find yourself under the wing of an experienced ship’s crew. These professionals look forward to welcoming young people like you each summer. Being at the helm, hoisting the sails, cooking for the crew, climbing the masts… all these tasks you perform as a team, under the supervision of the permanent crew. Spend night watches getting to know your new friends and observing the stars at sea, and spend the day laying in the net below watching the waves and looking for dolphins.
Ashore
At sea you meet yourself, on land the rest of the world. Each host port welcomes the sailing ships of The Tall Ships Races with a major event. You will get a taste of the local culture there, have the chance to take part in sports activities, creative exhibitions and show visitors around your ship. There will be music stages, world food markets, fireworks and more!
Every host port arranges a fantastic Crew Parade allowing you and your team to dress up and celebrate your achievements throughout the town or city, there is a Crew Prize Giving event where ships are recognised for their participation in the race, and to top it off there will be a Crew Party on your last night to ensure you and your new friends have a brilliant time before the ships head off on the next race the following day!

- 8th – 17th July 2023
- 10 nights
- 15 – 24 year olds
- No sailing experience required!

- Travel to Hartlepool from Fredrikstad included
- Accommodation on the ship included
- Meals on the ship (excludes drinks from the bar)
- Taking part in the magnificent Parade of Sail
- Learn to sail, crew activities, crew parade, crew party all included!

Black Diamond Option
Hartlepool, UK to Den Helder, Holland (and back)
- 24th June – 9th July 2023
- 14 nights
- 18 – 24 year olds
- No sailing experience required!
- Take to the seas on our local Black Diamond ship!
- Team building event
- Water safety training
- Travel from Hartlepool to Den Helder and back!
- Accommodation on the ship included
- Meals on the ship (excludes drinks from the bar)
- Taking part in two magnificent Parade of Sails and Crew Parties
- Learn to sail, crew activities, crew parade, crew party all included!
- You will need to arrange your own passport and travel insurance
